Part of the Andrea Mitchell Center's "Intimations of a New World Order" Faculty Workshop Series
Join us for a conversation with Hanna E. Morris, Assistant Professor at the School of the Environment, University of Toronto, about her new book, Apocalyptic Authoritarianism: Climate Crisis, Media, and Power. The book looks at how American news sources have covered climate change since 2016 and at the reactionary politics that have manifested around that coverage. Morris argues that this reporting has often limited how the public imagines and responds to the crisis, and she makes the case for climate journalism that supports a more inclusive and democratic response.
Morris will be joined by Audrey Jaquiss, political theorist and PhD Candidate at Penn, and Gregory Koutnik, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Beloit College. Together they will discuss climate journalism, the politics of crisis and catastrophe, the rise of authoritarian responses to a warming world, and what a more democratic approach to climate change might look like.
