THE MEANINGS OF THE FIRST AMENDMENT, written at the end of the eighteenth century, remain highly contested into the twenty-first.  In particular, the two clauses dealing with religion – one proscribing its establishment, one protecting its free exercise – invite interpretations that seem at odds with each other.  Is religion in the public sphere guaranteed under the free exercise clause, or is it prohibited under the establishment clause?  Join two leading legal scholars and activists, Barry Lynn and Jay Sekulow, as they make their cases about where and how the line between church and state should be drawn.  Their conversation will be moderated by Hugh Taft-Morales.

Barry W. Lynn has served as executive director of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, and an accomplished speaker and lecturer.  Jay Sekulow is Chief Counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice, an accomplished Supreme Court advocate, an expert on religious liberty, and a respected broadcaster. Hugh Taft-Morales is leader of the Ethical Humanist Society of Philadelphia and the Baltimore Ethical Society, and is a consulting Leader with the Ethical Society Without Walls.
